Scripps to Take Scientific Lead in $25 Million
Global Network to Monitor Greenhouse Gases
You wouldn't go on a diet without weighing yourself. Likewise, you shouldn't try to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions without finding an accurate way of measuring results. But that's exactly what's been happening, to a degree, in the United States and many parts of the world, scientists say. Last week, UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography stepped in to become the world’s greenhouse gas scale, so to speak. Officials announced they had entered into a collaboration with Maryland-based Earth Networks, a company specializing in weather monitoring, that will provide $25 million over the next five years to create the largest privately funded global system ever built to monitor greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide and methane. Hundreds from Campus Turn Out in Honor
of Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Day of Service
More than 500 people from UC San Diego represented the university in San Diego’s 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Saturday. Following the parade, as part of the MLK Day of Service and UC San Diego’s Volunteer50 program, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and some 100 students, staff, faculty and alumni, and San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez (District 8), volunteered at the Sherman Heights Community Center. O'Brien Named Division II Baseball Coach of Year
After leading the UC San Diego baseball team to its finest season in the history of the program in 2010, head coach Dan O'Brien has been named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year by FieldTurf. O'Brien skippered the Tritons to a 54-8 overall record, the most wins and fewest losses in school history, and a trip to the national championship game in Cary, N.C. More

National Children's Study Begins Local Recruitment
The National Children's Study has begun inviting women in San Diego to participate in the largest long-term examination of children's health and development ever conducted in the United States. Researchers from the UC San Diego School of Medicine and San Diego State University are seeking to enroll women ages 18-49 who are pregnant or may become pregnant in the next few years into the San Diego County arm of the study. Diversity Conference Scheduled for Jan. 27
John Muir College and the Cross Cultural Center will host a Teaching Diversity Conference Jan. 27. At the event, educators and students will discuss the importance of incorporating diversity into the college experience. Participants will also learn to share strategies and best practices for teaching diversity in community college and university classrooms. Click here to register.

From single dad to YouTube sensation, the last two weeks have been a whirlwind for Jorge Narvaez, a UC San Diego ethnic studies major and amateur musician. A video he posted on the popular website of himself singing with his oldest daughter has been viewed nearly 3.6 million times. Last week, Narvaez drove his two daughters, ages 6 and 2, to Los Angeles, to tape segments on "The
Ellen DeGeneres Show" and one of Ryan Seacrest's shows.
