Have Sun God, Will Travel

Claire Caraska | Jan. 31, 2011

Hong Kong. London. Sydney. Barcelona. What do all of these places have in common? They were recently paid a visit by one of UC San Diego’s favorite and most famous campus icons — the Sun God.

Well, not the Sun God, but rather a paper cutout of Niki de Saint Phalle’s colorful sculpture, the first work installed as part of the Stuart Collection on campus.

Recently launched by UCSD Alumni, the Traveling Sun God campaign encourages alumni, students, faculty and staff to take the Sun God with them on their next global getaway (or at home) and snap a photo with the Sun God in front of a famous landmark or favorite local spot.

“The Traveling Sun God was created to demonstrate the many places far and wide across the globe that our 130,000 alumni live in and travel to,” says Suzi Sterner, director of Alumni Programs. “It’s a creative and fun way for alumni to connect with UCSD — from wherever they are — during the university’s 50th Anniversary celebration.”

Jenifer Jagielski, Revelle ’91, found herself down under, sharing a moment with her Sun God “mate” during a Lord Mayor's New Year's Eve party at the base of the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In Hong Kong, James Ho, ERC ’11, captured the Sun God with the Tian Tan Buddha (or Big Buddha) near the Po Lin Monastery.

But you don’t have to jet set abroad to get into the picture with our campus icon. Whether it is La Jolla or Lhasa, the Sun God is ready to go. And it takes up minimal space in suitcases — be sure to pack it next to your camera. (Download your own Traveling Sun God.)

“We know our alumni are changing lives around the world,” says Armin Afsahi, Revelle ’90, executive director of UCSD Alumni. “We wanted to let the Sun God bear witness to the global impact our alumni are making, as well as the fun they are having.”

Travelers are encouraged to post their photos on the UCSD Alumni Facebook page or e-mail it to alumni@ucsd.edu. You can view photos on the UCSD Alumni Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ucsdalumni.
