Campus Cupids Will Find Plentyto Do to Celebrate Special Day

Ioana Patringenaru | Feb. 2, 2011

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the UC San Diego campus is offering plenty of concerts, plays, movies and other activities to enjoy with your sweetheart. We’ve listed some of them below. Pick one, pick two—or more.

Outdoorsy, sporty types can take their sweetheart on a moonlight kayak adventure on Mission Bay on Feb. 11 and 13 or a moonlight hike on Cowles Mountain, in the Mission Trails Regional Park, near Lake Murray, on Feb. 12. Looking for something to do during the day? Go tide pooling with naturalists from the Birch Aquarium on Feb. 13.

Looking for a workout without leaving campus? On Valentine’s Day, UCSD Recreation is offering sweetheart two-for-one passes at the Outback Climbing Center, located at the Canyonview pool. Recreation also offers a couple’s massage class, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 12, which will teach you how to kick back and help each other relax.

For music enthusiasts, the music department is putting on its annual Soirée for Music Lovers, 8 p.m., Feb. 13. Or come take in some chamber music at 8 p.m., Feb. 11, when the New Century Chamber Orchestra will perform pieces by Tchaikovsky and Bartok, among others. The chamber orchestra is led by world-renowned violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Both concerts take place at the new Conrad Prebys Concert Hall.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more contemporary, Cary Brothers, a self-proclaimed “cheeseburger aficionado,” film freak and anglophile, will perform at The Loft at 8 p.m., Feb. 16.

For dance lovers, the UCSD department of theatre and dance is offering thesisWORKS, a two-piece show Feb. 9 to 12. One piece, titled Stereoblind explores the limits and possibilities inherent in the act of seeing. The other, titled Space Between, blends movement, spoken text, projection and sound design.

Finally, on Feb. 10, Warren, Sixth and Roosevelt colleges are partnering to offer a Valentine’s Extravaganza at all three colleges. Participants will be able to make gift boxes and stuff them with a fortune cookies, candy or cards. The event is open to students from all colleges.

And remember, if you want to buy some sweets for your sweet, chocolate bars made by UCSD alumni Michael and Richard Antonorsi are on sale throughout campus. Twenty of the bars hold a special, winning wrapper that gives admission to an exclusive tour of the brothers’ chocolate factory, followed by a chocolate and wine pairing party. The brothers’ company, Chuao Chocolatier, is donating 50 cents for each bar sold to Invent the Future, UCSD’s campaign to raise funds for undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.
