For others, here in San Diego and beyond, adequate food, basic health care, harmful social practices and political corruption are challenges they must face on a daily basis. The new Center on Global Justice in the Division of Social Sciences will address these types of issues when it launches this fall. More

A legendary advocate for American workers, a human rights activist and proponent of non-violence solutions, Cesar E. Chavez's legacy lives on in many ways. At UC San Diego, the life and achievements of Chavez will be celebrated with a series of events throughout the month of April. Chavez's birthday, March 31, is a statewide holiday and was observed by UC San Diego March 25. More

Stanley Miller gained fame with his 1953 experiment showing the synthesis of organic compounds thought to be important in setting the origin of life in motion. Five years later, he produced samples from a similar experiment, shelved them and, as far as friends and colleagues know, never returned to them in his lifetime. More

Rises 10 Percent After NFL Upsets
Calls to the police reporting men's assaults on their wives or intimate partners rose 10 percent in areas where the local National Football League team lost a game they were favored to win, according to an analysis of 900 regular-season NFL games. Football games are emotionally laden events of widespread interest, typically garnering 25 percent or more of a local television viewing audience. The disappointment of an unexpected loss, the researchers concluded, raises the risk that football fans may react inappropriately. More

UC San Diego Ranked 11th in the World
by Nature for Number of Research Papers Published
UC San Diego is ranked 11th in the world for the number of research papers published in Nature and its 16 other pre-eminent research journals, according to the Nature Publishing Group. UC San Diego was the top ranked university in the University of California system. Six UC campuses are ranked in the top 50 and if all 10 campuses were aggregated together, the UC system would be ranked No. 1. More

Global Women Speak Out
Voices of Women (VOW), one of UC San Diego's Volunteer50 featured non-profit groups, staged "Global Women Speak Out" on March 7. Thought-provoking readings by and about women from a variety of backgrounds and times were performed. UC San Diego Scholars Honored
with Faculty Excellence Awards
They represent diverse fields from opera to economics, neurosciences to literature, and psychology to oceanography, but six UC San Diego professors now share something in common: They are all recipients of Chancellor's Associates Faculty Excellence Awards. The prestigious awards are presented annually by the UC San Diego Chancellor's Associates donor group for excellence in teaching, research, community service, and visual and performing arts. The recognition ceremony and reception will be held Thursday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Atkinson Hall. More

Biology Alumna Donates $265,000 for Scholarships, Challenges Fellow Alumni to Support Students
With a generous gift of $265,000 to her alma mater, UC San Diego alumna Wendy Kwok will provide scholarship support for outstanding UC San Diego undergraduates majoring in biological sciences each year, in perpetuity. In addition, Kwok designated a portion of her gift as a match to challenge fellow alumni to follow her footsteps in providing support for today's students and tomorrow's science leaders and innovators.
