Science Festival Launches Home Run at PETCO Park
The typical questions bouncing around PETCO Park next week will center on pitcher Heath Bell's lethal fastball, Chase Headley's batting average and whether the Padres can make another run for the playoffs. This weekend, however, was a different story. Saturday, science took center stage at PETCO, leading to some decidedly un-baseball-related questions, such as: "Are you ready to extract your own DNA?" "Would you like to see a model of carbon dioxide?" and "Do you want to hold the heart of a cow?" ("Yes!" "Sure!" and "I don't think so..." were the responses, respectively). More

Crime and Football: Domestic
Violence
Rises 10 Percent After NFL Upsets
Calls to the police reporting men's assaults on their wives or intimate partners rose 10 percent in areas where the local National Football League team lost a game they were favored to win, according to an analysis of 900 regular-season NFL games.
Football games are emotionally laden events of widespread interest, typically garnering 25 percent or more of a local television viewing audience. The disappointment of an unexpected loss, the researchers concluded, raises the risk that football fans may react inappropriately. More

By Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw and John C. Welchman
"On the Beyond" is a far-reaching conversation between the Los Angeles-based artists Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw and art historian John C. Welchman. By turns passionate and humorous, off-beat and far-out, the dialogue posits no faith in and little hope for the beyond itself.
