Former President Bill Clinton brought 1,000 student social entrepreneurs from around the globe to UC San Diego this weekend to unleash an epidemic of helping others. They were taking part in the fourth annual Clinton Global Initiative University conference, which aims to help students turn their ideas into action. Ricardo Sandoval, a first-generation college student, grew up in Mexico and attended a small high school in Imperial Valley with just over 50 students in his senior class. After receiving his acceptance to UC San Diego, the excitement that Sandoval and his family felt soon gave way to worry over how they would pay for his education. Scholarship support provided the vehicle for Sandoval to attend UC San Diego, enabling him to graduate from the university with a degree in communications in 1994. Today, Sandoval is a newscast director for NBC San Diego. More

Fruit Fly's Response to Starvation
Could Help Control Human Appetites
Biologists at UC San Diego have identified the molecular mechanisms triggered by starvation in fruit flies that enhance the nervous system's response to smell, allowing these insects and presumably vertebrates—including humans—to become more efficient and voracious foragers when hungry.
Their discovery of the neural changes that control odor-driven food searches in flies, which they detail in a paper in the April 1 issue of the journal Cell, could provide a new way to potentially regulate human appetite. More

This investigation proposes a conceptual framework for measurement necessary for an analysis of household finance and economic development. The authors build on and, where appropriate, modify corporate financial accounts to create balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flows for households in developing countries, using an integrated household survey.
