Green Open House

Campus Throws Open
Doors to Reveal Green Spirit

How do you build a sustainable home that's also affordable? How do you green your business? What are some simple steps to reducing your carbon footprint in your everyday life? Many experts were on hand to answer these questions, and others, at UC San Diego's Green Open House Saturday. The event drew about 3,500 people from all over San Diego County and kicked off the campus' Earth Week celebrations. In addition to faculty demonstrations, the open house gave visitors tips for greening all aspects of their lives, from a car show, to cooking demonstrations, to a landscaping show.

On July 9, Birch Aquarium at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography will open "Boundless Energy," an outdoor, interactive exhibit that explores how we can use natural forces to power our lives. Boundless Energy, made possible through the support of lead sponsor Sempra Energy Foundation, will showcase innovative ways to harness renewable energy from the sun, wind and ocean motion. Undergraduate Admissions for Fall 2011

Business Information ConsumptionThe University of California, San Diego has admitted 18,234 freshmen for Fall 2011. The number of admitted students is down 122 or a 0.7 percent decrease from last year due to over enrollment from Fall 2010. The new freshmen were selected from a record 53,455 applications. UC San Diego admitted 3,512 underrepresented students, up 15.4 percent from Fall 2010. More arrow

Business Information ConsumptionEngineers at UC San Diego are using nanotechnology to increase the efficiency and enhance the performance of fuel cells, which could boost renewable energy options and reduce toxic emissions. Current fuel cell efficiencies are significantly limited, in part due to an inhibitive reaction from a byproduct. More arrow

Site for National Research Network
Business Information ConsumptionThe UC San Diego School of Medicine is among 27 research institutions selected across North America to be a part of the Cancer Immunotherapy Trials Network funded by the National Cancer Institute. The goal is to establish a network of top academic immunologists to conduct multi–center research on agents that boost patients' own immune systems to fight their cancer. More arrow

Improving Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
of Cancer Through Advanced Optical Imaging

Carolyn Schutt Carolyn Schutt may be on to something big, something that will help revolutionize the way physicians diagnose and treat cancer. The UC San Diego bioengineering grad student and her labmates Michael Benchimol and Mark Hsu are working on a method to use highly-sensitive light imaging and focused light therapies deep inside the body that will, for example, help detect and treat breast cancer more effectively. Effectiveness of Cancer Treatments in Clinical Trials

The initial tests are designed to gauge how effective and easy to use the system is for physicians and patients enrolled in clinical trials of treatments for head and neck or colon cancer. Cloud ComputingTo reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings, computer scientists at UC San Diego have come up with a way to use real-time occupancy sensors and computer algorithms to create ‘smart’ heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. More arrow

Trauma Care at UC San Diego Health System

Cloud Computing An electronic, cloud-based approach to sharing radiology files with other medical institutions is expediting the care of UC San Diego Health System trauma patients. The method is currently being used to speed the diagnosis and treatment of patients sent to UC San Diego Medical Center-Hillcrest from remote area hospitals. More arrow

Book Arts Faire to Celebrate
Books, Geisel Library's 40th Anniversary
Geisel 40th
San Diego Book Arts and the UC San Diego Mandeville Special Collections Library will hold a Book Arts Faire May 1 to celebrate both the art of the book as well as the 40th anniversary of the Geisel Library building at UCSD. The event, which will be held in the Seuss Room in Geisel Library, is free and open to the public. More arrow

UC San Diego Composer Lei Liang Awarded Rome Prize Lei Liang UC San Diego composer Lei Liang has been awarded the prestigious Rome Prize. The award, announced April 14, is given by the American Academy in Rome each year to approximately 30 artists and scholars, who spend six months to two years at the academy working on new projects.
