Three UC San Diego professors have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors bestowed on U.S. scientists and engineers. Herbert Levine, J. Andrew McCammon and David T. UC San Diego $2 Million for Biofuels Research
Algae Bags
The California Energy Commission has awarded $2 million to UC San Diego to accelerate research that will demonstrate the feasibility of using a variety of new kinds of biofuels to supplement or replace petroleum-based transportation fuels in the future. The state agency selected the university for the award, which will be used to investigate a wide range of plant-based biofuels, because it is one of the nation's leaders in developing technologies to turn algae into biofuels. Valerie Ramey It's officially the "Year of the Rabbit" on the Chinese calendar. But 2011 might be better known as the "Year of the Tiger Mother." In early January, Yale law professor Amy Chua published a critique of coddling Western-style parenting in The Wall Street Journal, "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior." The essay, summarizing her book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" set off a media maelstrom. She was hailed. She was reviled. Lots of parents wrung their hands. The hullabaloo prompted Valerie Ramey, a professor of economics at the UC San Diego, to ask: What did the data have to say? More

Year After 72-day Stint in Newborn Intensive Care

Mother's Day A year ago, Andrea Wanner spent most of her first Mother's Day in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. Her son Joey was just three weeks old. He was born after a 29-week pregnancy, weighing just 1 pound 13 ounces. The nurses in the unit made Wanner a Mother's Day card with Joey's tiny footprints and handprints. More arrow

BaseballUC San Diego's baseball team picked up their third consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association season title Friday, along with a solid 10-4 win over Cal State San Bernardino.
