Three UC San Diego professors have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors bestowed on U.S. scientists and engineers. Herbert Levine, J. Andrew McCammon and David T. California Energy Commission Awards
UC San Diego $2 Million for Biofuels Research
The California Energy Commission has awarded $2 million to UC San Diego to accelerate research that will demonstrate the feasibility of using a variety of new kinds of biofuels to supplement or replace petroleum-based transportation fuels in the future.
The state agency selected the university for the award, which will be used to investigate a wide range of plant-based biofuels, because it is one of the nation's leaders in developing technologies to turn algae into biofuels.

It's officially the "Year of the Rabbit" on the Chinese calendar. But 2011 might be better known as the "Year of the Tiger Mother."
In early January, Yale law professor Amy Chua published a critique of coddling Western-style parenting in The Wall Street Journal, "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior." Year After 72-day Stint in Newborn Intensive Care
A year ago, Andrea Wanner spent most of her first Mother's Day in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. Her son Joey was just three weeks old. He was born after a 29-week pregnancy, weighing just 1 pound 13 ounces. The nurses in the unit made Wanner a Mother's Day card with Joey's tiny footprints and handprints. More
