Afghan Women's Writing
Opens Window to Shrouded World

A beautiful woman is an Afghan woman with a heart that is big like an ocean, but full of sorrow-rocks. She must be strong. She has no tears left to shed.
The words flashed on Barbara Field's screen and moved her deeply. She had been working with an Afghan woman named Mahnaz on an essay about the definition of a beautiful woman and was hoping to get it published soon. Field, who manages communications and metrics for the Office of the Controller, volunteers as a mentor for the Afghan Women's Writing Project in her spare time. More arrow

Close Up: Economist James Hamilton on Gas Prices
James Hamilton Some experts are predicting that gas prices could hit $5 per gallon this summer. We decided to talk to UC San Diego economist James Hamilton, an expert in oil markets, to find out whether their predictions are going to come true. Luckily, Hamilton told us in this video Q and A that he expects to see a decrease in prices in the coming months. But over the long run, prices will remain high. So don't buy that gas-guzzling SUV just yet, he said.

Rethinking the Border
Political Equator 3 project takes creative approach
to addressing San Diego-Tijuana border region issues

Border It's at once an informal settlement, a military installation and a vulnerable environmental zone. Conflict of Interest Office
Helps Balance Innovation, Disclosure

Valerie Dixon "Conflict of interest," says Valerie Dixon, director of the university's Conflict of Interest Office, correcting a common misconception, "is not a statement of wrongdoing." Rather, she says, the term refers to situations in which financial or other considerations may compromise—or have the appearance of compromising—an employee's professional judgment. And that applies to administration, management, teaching, and other professional activities, not just research. More arrow

Students Gather to Celebrate
Traditional Watermelon Drop

Watermelon Drop The 47th Annual Watermelon Drop, UC San Diego's oldest tradition, took place Friday, when the "Watermelon Queens" raced up seven stories of Urey Hall and dropped the sacrificial fruit into history. Hundreds of students showed up to witness this annual ritual. This year's splat extended as far as 60 feet, 2 inches away from the point of impact. Following the drop, free barbecue, cake, and watermelon were available to all in attendance.
