Preparing to address the 2011 graduates of UC San Diego, Dr. Connie Mariano found herself returning to her college study habits. She spent late nights at Starbucks tossing around ideas with friends. She asked her two sons, ages 22 and 24, for advice, hoping to learn what their generation wanted to hear before entering into the real world.

Irwin Jacobs and Jack Wolf Win 2011 Marconi
Prize, Known as Nobel of Information Technology
Irwin Mark Jacobs and Jack Keil Wolf—two engineers whose groundbreaking research and designs in digital communication helped propel the information revolution—are winners of the prestigious 2011 Marconi Society Fellowship and Prize. Both men were longtime professors at UC San Diego. The prize is sometimes referred to as the Nobel of Information Technology. More

Two Triton Pitchers Drafted by Major League Baseball
UC San Diego senior pitchers Tim Shibuya and Guido Knudson were both drafted Tuesday on the second day of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Shibuya, a 6-foot-1-inch, 190-pound right-hander, was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round as the 718th overall pick. Knudson, a 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound righty, was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 28th round, the 857th overall pick. More

62,000 Hours of Service Worth $1.5 Million
More than 3,300 members of the UC San Diego community donated over 62,000 hours of service during the university's 50th anniversary celebration, contributing roughly $1.5 million of free labor according to calculations from Independent Sector which provides the value of a volunteer hour. More

UC San Diego Charts Significant Progress
in Diversity Efforts During Its 50th Anniversary Year
From artwork to outreach, UC San Diego continues to institute programs and policies aimed at enhancing campus climate and welcoming a diverse community. The Chicano Legacy 40 Años mural is now a permanent fixture on campus, the summer "Focus on the Future" program will be expanded to include students and teachers from three San Diego high schools in addition to participants from Compton High School, and the 2010-2011 freshmen and transfers and admissions for the 2011-2012 academic year yielded record increases in underrepresented student populations. Hellman Fellows Fund Grants
$2.4 Million to Support Research of Junior Faculty
The Hellman Fellows Fund has made a grant of $2.4 million to UC San Diego to support junior faculty members in their scholarly work as they strive for tenure with the university. The gift from the Hellman Fellows Fund provides renewed funding to UC San Diego's Hellman Fellows program, which was established in 1994 with a $2.5 million gift from Warren and Chris Hellman and their family. World's Leading Biological Physicists
to Converge on Campus Next Week
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will be on campus next week to participate in an international scientific conference. But Chu, a co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, won't be here to talk about U.S. energy policy. Since the establishment at UC San Diego of the National Science Foundation's Center for Theoretical Biological Physics in 2002, scientists around the world have begun to recognize the value of applying the theoretical tools of physics and mathematics to better understand the fundamental principles governing complex biological systems. Looks Forward to New Challenges
Charter school to be represented at all 10 UC campuses by Class 2011 graduates
Eighty-one percent of the class of 2011 at The Preuss School UCSD were accepted to at least one UC campus, and six seniors will attend UC San Diego. In fact, the charter school will be represented at all 10 of the UC campuses by a total of 30 seniors. Other top colleges like Harvard, Georgetown, Duke and Johns Hopkins are also among the choices for this year’s Preuss grads. More

Cancer Center Hosts Survivor Beach June 19
Hundreds of surfers, cancer survivors and friends will gather together, with surfboards in hand, on La Jolla Shores June 19 for an annual San Diego tradition: Survivor Beach. Attendees will place surfboards along the edge of the shore, nose-to-tail, from Scripps Pier down La Jolla Shores, with the goal of forming a record-breaking line of several hundred surfboards. More

Triton Pitcher Named California Collegiate
Athletic Association Female Athlete of Year
Camille Gaito of the No. 1 ranked UC San Diego softball team was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Female Athlete of the Year Tuesday. Gaito becomes UC San Diego's second straight and fourth student-athlete overall to be honored as the conference's top women's athlete. More
