Alumni Go Wild in San Francisco

More than 300 Bay Area alumni and friends “ran wild” through the nationally renowned California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco during a special celebration Sept. 16. Given after-hours access to explore the Golden Gate Park museum, attendees encountered a range of creatures and natural environments, from lions, zebras and baboons mounted in dioramas to live African penguins, exotic fish swimming overhead and a lush rainforest.
“A Night in the Wild,” hosted by UCSD Alumni, was the best attended off-campus event yet, and the follow-up to last year’s successful and CASE Award-winning alumni celebration, “Night in Napa,” at the Castello di Amorosa Castle and Winery.
The event served as an occasion to engage and foster the alumni community in Northern California, home to more than 20,000 alumni. The venue, which houses an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum and four-story rainforest all under one roof, was chosen for its unique setting and close ties with the university’s focus on science, research and innovation.
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox was joined by Leo Spiegel, ’83, UC San Diego Foundation board trustee, and Matt Newsome, ’91, vice president of UCSD Alumni Board of Directors, in kicking off the festivities, which featured gourmet hors d’oeuvres, specially paired organic California wines, local handcrafted beers and live music by blues vocalist Dina Rao.
