UC San Diego Named 33rd Best University in World by Thomson Reuters and Times Higher Education Rankings
UC San Diego is ranked the 33rd best university in the world, according to Times Higher Education.
The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 33rd best university in the world, according to Times Higher Education. The London-based higher education magazine partnered with Thomson Reuters for the “World Universities Rankings 2011-2012,” which recognized UC San Diego for its learning environment, ground-breaking research and economic impact.
“This recognition is a testament to the quality of our students, staff and faculty, and the university’s spirit of innovation,” Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said. “It’s an honor to have UC San Diego’s contributions to education, research, service and patient care recognized globally.”
Times Higher Education and Thomson Reuters ranked 400 institutions with expert input from more than 50 leading figures in the education sector from 15 countries across every continent. The magazine noted: “We believe we have created the gold standard in international university performance comparisons.”
The rankings measure university’s research budgets and impact, faculty publications and the diversity of the student population, among other factors.
Times Higher Education ranked universities in five broad performance categories:
- Teaching—the learning environment
- Research—volume, income and reputation
- Citations—research influence
- Industry income — innovation
- International outlook—staff, students and research
