Dyson Initiative - Pediatrics Training in the Community
Pediatric residents - making a difference'

"Just exciting" is how Patty Vitale, a third-year pediatric resident at UCSD, describes her participation in the Dyson Initiative - Pediatrics Training in the Community. "UCSD is doing so much in the community, but this allows us to get out there even more."
Vitale is a pediatrician in the five-year, $2.5 million grant program from the Dyson Foundation to fund the development and support of learning activities designed to change the way pediatric residents acquire their skills, knowledge and outlook. "The program," says Vitale, "provides avenues for residents to reach out into the community and make a difference."
Dr. Vivian Reznik, UCSD Pediatrics Department vice-chair, says the program is unique in that San Diego has such a diverse population, including Mexicans, American Indians and Navy personnel. It involves "learning environments" says Reznik, "different from the hospitals and clinics of traditional medical education and it extends to homes, community-based organizations, churches, shelters, schools, community centers, day care centers and public health systems.
