Staying after school can be fun and games

Imagine staying after school for two extra hours - and it's your choice.
Well, a select number of students at National City Middle School do. As a matter of fact, according to Jerry Balzano, project leader of the Game Designer Studio, a UCSD outreach program, it is sometimes difficult to get the students to go home.

"The kids come after school, take their own time, use a special computer software and build games from the ground up," says Balzano. "Games, yes. But it's hard work to create a game. It involves logical thinking, problem solving and a dedication to learning as they create. It is both challenging and entertaining."

Balzano says the next step is to turn the games the students create into an interactive web page with open season for all competitive internet surfers.
"The idea is for kids not just to be consumers of software, but creators of software," says Balzano.
