UCSD was recently selected to receive $15 million for 15 renewable energy projects under the federally sponsored Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs) program. As part of the same program, the entire region of San Diego received $154 million for renewable energy projects. Through their research and fast paced problem solving, four UCSD students were instrumental in securing these grants, says Jan Kleissl, a professor in the Jacobs School of Engineering. While taking an engineering course on solar power with Kleissl, these students came up with an analytical tool that helped the applicants from the San Diego region prepare their proposals.
