MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR H. STUART HUGHES AT UCSD NOV. 12

A memorial service for H. Stuart Hughes, professor emeritus of history at the University of California, San Diego, will take place Nov. 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Deutz Conference Room at the Institute of the Americas' Copley International Conference Center.

Hughes, a leading scholar of European intellectual history, died October 21 at age 83 in La Jolla after a long illness. He was best known for his trilogy of works on the European intellectual scene in the late 19th century and the 20th century: "Consciousness and Society" (1958), "The Obstructed Path" (1968) and "The Sea Change" (1975). His preeminence in the field of European history was recognized by the American Historical Association in 1997 with its Award for Scholarly Distinction.

Hughes also was active in the political arena, running as an independent candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts in 1962, and in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II, serving as chief of the Research and Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services in the Mediterranean Theatre.

Speakers at the memorial service will include: Andrew Wright, Professor Emeritus of English Literature, UCSD; Michael Bernstein, Chair and Associate Professor of History, UCSD; Paul Robinson, Richard W. Lyman Professor in the Humanities, Stanford University and a former student of Hughes; Jon Snyder, Professor of Italian, UC Santa Barbara; and Hughes' son, David Hughes, Assistant Professor of Human Ecology, Rutgers University. Music will be performed by János Négyesy, Professor of Music, UCSD.
