The American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Diego chapter recently awarded UC San Diego’s new Student Services Center with the Institute’s highest honor award. AIA also recognized UC San Diego’s Pepper Canyon Hall in the institutional category with a citation in their annual Design Awards for its powerful yet simple architectural design.

According to the AIA, the UC San Diego Student Services Center, designed by renowned San Diego architect, Rob Quigley, received the honor award in the institutional category because of its extraordinary, thoroughly resolved architectural design.

Pepper Canyon Hall also was recognized in the institutional category for its noteworthy architectural vision.

A distinguished panel of architects that included James Richärd and Angela Brooks traveled to San Diego in June to evaluate nominated projects and select the AIA 2007 winners.

The panel evaluated more than 80 applications in this year’s Design Awards Program and chose to honor only the most impressive structures.

“Our panel was impressed by the inviting nature of the architecture,” Brooks said about the Student Services Center. “The openness and circulation — the manner that students move through the building — worked very well and unexpected, playful details resulted in a building that opens itself to the student community and invites participation.”

The Student Services Center, which opened its doors in May, houses over 400 UCSD employees and serves as a one-stop complex where students can receive academic and administrative support in addition to completing business transactions.

Pepper Canyon Hall, which opened in 2004, was designed by SmithGroup, one of the nation’s largest architectural firms. The 44,418-square-foot building, located on the Sixth College campus, contains classroom spaces as well as a variety of staff offices.
