UC San Diego Celebrates National Women's History Month with Hall of Fame Ceremony

The Women’s Center at the University of California, San Diego will host the eighth annual Induction Ceremony for the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame March 28 in the Price Center Ballroom on the UC San Diego campus. The ceremony highlights National Women’s History Month celebrated each March.

Jessica Chang, host of Shades of San Diego, Channel 4, will emcee the event which will begin at 5 p.m. It is open to the public.

Inductees, their category, and contributions, include:

Monique Henderson – Spirit of the Hall of Fame – 2004 and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and four-time California State Champion in the 400 meter dash.

Joan Arrington Craigwell – Trailblazer – decorated Vietnam Veteran and counselor to veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Charlotte Baker – Empowerer of Women – San Diego County’s first woman physician,  the only woman president of the San Diego County Medical Society, and founder of the San Diego YWCA.

Kate Yavenditti – Creator of Structural Change – lawyer pioneer in the field of domestic violence, co-founding the County’s Task Force on Domestic Violence.

Marisa B. Ugarte – Creator of Structural Change – founder and director of the nonprofit Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition whose mission is to “preserve the dignity and well being of commercially and sexually exploited women and children.”

Edith C. Dabbs – Builder of Multicultural Understanding – teacher of English as a second language and citizenship classes from 1956 to 2003 in the Continuing and Adult Education Division of the San Diego Community College District.

Li-Rong Lilly Cheng – Cultural Guardian – professor of communicative disorders at San Diego State University with expertise in disorders of language in multilingual populations

Co-hosting the event with the UC San Diego Women’s Center are the San Diego County Commission on the Status of Women, Women’s History Museum, and the Department of Women’s Studies, SDSU. Tickets are $75 for individuals; $40, students. For reservations and further information, call the Women’s History Museum at (619) 233-7963.

UC San Diego also is presenting (Re)Defining the UC San Diego Woman: Empowering YOU During Changing Times, a conference for UCSD staff, in celebration of National Women’s History Month. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 11 in the Price Center East Ballroom and will cover taking charge of your career, marketing yourself during changing times, connecting with valuable resources, and benefiting from a mentor. The conference is hosted by the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women with support from key campus units.
