UC San Diego’s dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship was cited by the national Arbor Day Foundation in naming the campus as a 2009 “Tree Campus USA University” for the second consecutive year.

Tree Campus USA, launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and supported by a grant from Toyota, honors colleges and universities, and leaders of the campus and surrounding communities, for promoting healthy urban forest management.

UC San Diego met the required five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to receive the honor. These include establishing a campus tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, verification of dedicated annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan, involvement in an Arbor Day observance, and the institution of a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.

“While there is no doubt that UC San Diego is in the vanguard of sustainability in the nation, it is indeed very exciting to be recognized for the second time in two years for promoting the responsible management of our environment,” said Sam Oludunfe, campus urban forester.

Charles Morgan, assistant director of Facilities Management, added, “The revamping of our ecological resource management strategy, beginning in 2005, is geared toward the preservation of our green assets for the good of all. Any approach short of this is not an option. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to not misuse the privilege we have to make the earth a better place, one tree at a time. This is the motivation for UC San Diego’s new tree planting thrust alongside the maintenance of old forest tracts.”

The Arbor Day Foundation launched Tree Campus USA in the fall of 2008 by planting trees at nine college campuses throughout the United States, including UC San Diego.
