UCSD AND NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF
SINGAPORE FORGE GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP

Advancing the Life Sciences in Growing Biotechnology Sectors

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Extension and National University of Singapore (NUS) Extension have entered a partnership focused on the delivery of state-of the-art education and training in drug systems biology, development and clinical research to Singapore’s rapidly growing biotechnology sector.

Beginning January 2004, NUS Extension will offer a cross-section of courses exploring the areas of medicinal chemistry, biostatistics, molecular biology, regulatory affairs, new product development, and biotech business developed by UCSD Extension’s Bioscience department. Coursework will be delivered online and on location by UCSD instructors in both Singapore and San Diego.

“Singapore is poised to become one of the world’s largest biotechnology centers. Our ideas and resources are plentiful—combined with continuing education, NUS and UCSD will foster the development of Singapore’s more than 20,000 scientists.” said Associate Professor Koh How Eng, Director of NUS Extension.

Under the new partnership, UCSD’s life science programs will be offered on both sides of the Pacific. In March, students from NUS will travel to San Diego to attend UCSD’s one-week signature program in Medicinal Chemistry. In addition to in-depth coursework, scientists from Singapore and around the globe will be able to share industry experience and compare best practices.

“The exchange of knowledge will not only benefit each institution, it will strengthen each region’s workforce, and in turn, the global economy—reinforcing San Diego and Singapore as innovators in the life sciences,” noted Mary Walshok, Dean of UCSD Extension.
