Chancellor's 5-K Raises Record
Amount for Undergraduate Scholarships

Nearly 1,400 UCSD students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends met at the white chalk starting line on RIMAC field on Friday afternoon to travel the winding 3.1-mile course through campus in support of undergraduate scholarships. Irreverent Fashion Show Benefits Women’s Cancers
To help raise awareness and dollars for all women’s cancers, the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Fashion Valley partnered with the Moores UCSD Cancer Center to host “Men About Town,” a slightly irreverent fashion featuring nearly 30 prominent San Diego men dressed in Saks apparel. Now in its second year, the fashion show is co-chaired by Katherine Kennedy and Robert Horsman.

Gene for Joubert Syndrome
with Excessive Brain Folds Discovered

Researchers at the School of Medicine have discovered the gene for a form of Joubert Syndrome, a condition present before birth that affects an area of the brain controlling balance and coordination in about 1 in 10,000 individuals.

Psychiatry Dept. to Study Bipolar Patients with Major Grant from National Institute of Mental Health
Psychiatric researchers at the School of Medicine have received a five-year, $1.25 million grant from the National Institutes of Mental Health to study how patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, regulate their behaviors and thoughts.

Jamie Link Develops Formula for Early Success
Among her many other duties, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox works hard to increase the numbers of women in science. She explains the opportunities and rewards to girls and young women from grade schools to grad schools across the nation. Now the chancellor has another "link" in her persuasive chain of positive examples. Jamie Link, a graduate student in chemistry and biochemistry at UCSD, is among 100 of the world's top young innovators, as selected by MIT's Technology Review magazine — one of 30 women so honored and, at 26, the youngest member of the prestigious group.
