Four
San Diego Powerhouses
Join Forces for Stem Cell Research
UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and leaders of three
other San Diego science institutions signed an agreement
Friday to create a ground-breaking alliance dedicated
to stem cell research. The independent consortium
plans to build a joint facility and seek funding for
stem cell work. In addition to UCSD, the new San Diego
Consortium for Regenerative Medicine includes the
Burnham Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological
Studies and The Scripps Research Institute. More

Regents Take Action to Reinstate
Contributions to Retirement Plan
The UC Regents approved a series of actions Thursday
aimed at ensuring the stability of the UC Retirement
Plan, including the resumption of university and UCRP
member contributions effective July 2007, with contribution
rates increasing gradually to 16 percent of covered

The UC Board of Regents voted Thursday to divest from
several companies involved in significant business
activities that provide revenue to the Sudanese government
to continue acts of genocide in Darfur, marking the
first major public university in the nation to take

New Coordinator Of Faculty Mentor Program
Named
Veronica
Henson-Phillips, an academic advising specialist and
professor of Speech Communication and Theatre, has
been appointed coordinator of the Faculty Mentor Program.
In her position, Henson-Phillips will play a significant
role in furthering UCSD’s mission of preparing
more undergraduates in a wide range of academic disciplines
for research opportunities with faculty members, and
for graduate or professional school admission. More |

iGrid 2005 Receives Innovation Award
A
demonstration of more than four dozen scientific applications
running on very-high-bandwidth optical networks –
many of them linking different countries on different
continents – has won the CENIC 2006 Innovations
in Networking Award for Experimental/Developmental
