Bill Walkowicz took part in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K for the first time Friday, but that didn’t stop him from winning. The graduate student in chemistry crossed the finish line in just 15 minutes and 51 seconds.

“I just love running,” he said, catching his breath.

Actually, Walkowicz has been running competitively since age 12 but hadn’t won a race for a while. He broke the spell when he arrived ahead of more than 1400 other participants in this year’s Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars. The event has been raising funds for undergraduate scholarships for 11 years.

“I’m so grateful for so many people contributing so much,” Chancellor Marye Anne Fox told participants before they set out.

Students and top runners won’t be the only winners this year. The Top Ten Reasons to Love UCSD promotion gave every participant a chance to get prizes, including American Airlines tickets. Fifty 5K participants wore bright yellow T-shirts, each listing one of the top 10 reasons to love UCSD. By e-mailing just one reason to before 5 p.m. today, walkers and runners will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win. For details on how to participate, visit

Several participants said they liked the idea of a promotion.

“Anything to make it more fun,” said Tim Kahlor. “It’s a great day to relax and get out.”

Kahlor, a staff member in Housing and Dining Services, said he was running for his son, who is currently serving in Iraq. He had pinned the young man’s picture on the back of his T-shirt.

Lindia and Arturo Jacobo said they had come out to support a good cause. They both are Revelle alumni, and Lindia is a faculty member in the department of pediatrics. “It’s a great opportunity to come back and see the campus,” Arturo said.

Since the inaugural run in 1996, the Chancellor’s 5K has raised more than $1.7 million for undergraduate scholarships. Funds raised this year also contribute to the $1 billion fund-raising goal of The Campaign for UCSD: Imagine What’s Next.

UCSD Chancellor Fox set the fund-raising bar high for this year’s race and challenged the UCSD and local San Diego community in several ways, including:

  • For every $50,000 raised in event sponsorship, the Chancellor will add $5,000 from the Chancellor’s Associates fund, up to $20,000. Organizers said they will have a tally of the total amount raised this year sometime later this week.
  • The Chancellor also will donate $1,000 because she wasn’t the last one to cross the finish line. “Please be merciful to your Chancellor, there’s $1,000 on the line,” she said before giving the signal to start the race.
  • Associated Students officers will wash the Chancellor’s car after failing to get 600 students to register for the event.

Meanwhile, the community also stepped up to the plate. Sponsor Amylin sent a team of 60 employees to participate. Following a tradition established by former Chancellor Bob Dynes, alumnus Michael Robertson, who founded and Lindows, donated $25 for each of the 134 people who beat him, for a total of $3,350. His wife, Leslie Burcham Robertson, gave $25 for 119 women who beat her, for a total of $2,975.
