After a year on the road, the UCSD Near You tour has once again finished its annual run—boasting more than 600 alumni, parents and friends in attendance at 10 different stops throughout the country. Hosted in cities from Boston and New York City, to San Francisco and Los Angeles, the annual program features UC San Diego’s most outstanding faculty and alumni experts as they provide alums, both near and far, with the opportunity to learn about the groundbreaking research and initiatives emanating from UCSD.
“UCSD Near You is an innovative program that puts UC San Diego’s academic and artistic excellence on the road to the benefit of alumni and friends,” said Armin Afsahi, executive director of the UCSD Alumni Association. “Since its founding three years ago, the program has gained substantial momentum. Our alums are thrilled to be able to reconnect with their alma mater—especially when they reside outside the San Diego region.”

This year’s lineup of featured topics included discussion of the upcoming presidential election, international terrorism, ethics of stem cell research, a behind-the-scenes look at the Tony-nominated Broadway musical LoveMusik and tips on how to foster high-powered leadership skills. Other topics included UC San Diego’s efforts to create the “green collar” leaders of tomorrow, climate change and its impact on politics, and the instability of China’s political structure and what it means for the United States.
Presented by the UCSD Alumni Association and the UC San Diego Office of Development, UCSD Near You will return to San Diego as part of its 2008 tour on February 7. Additional San Diego events are also slated for spring and fall of 2008. For more information, please visit www.ucsdnearyou.ucsd.edu or call (858) 534-3900.
