Teachers often inspire students, but students can move teachers, too. Such was the case during a recent visit to UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance by long-time educator and arts supporter Lois Chant. Her $1.25 million legacy gift will boost the department’s efforts to continue its top-ranked theater training program.

In an effort to advance research on one of the deadliest forms of cancer, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine researchers Andrew Lowy, MD, and Tannishtha Reya, PhD, have been recruited for their expertise in preclinical modeling, clinical trials and stem cell biology to join a “dream team” of international pancreatic cancer researchers.

UC San Diego Department of Literature Professor Daisuke Miyao is interested in silent era films, but he also appreciates the connections between early films and modern cinema. His interests inspired him to invite Kuji Yoshida, a legendary figure of postwar Japanese cinema, with films famous in the 1960s, to UC San Diego Nov. 10, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Price Center West Ballroom.

Education reform was a key focus of this year’s Mexico Moving Forward symposium, organized by UC San Diego’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies. The two-day event brought a packed house of academic, political and civil-society leaders to campus Oct. 29 – 30 for talks in part addressing a series of reforms the Mexican government adopted in the last three years. Called “Recapturing the Mexico Moment,” the symposium included experts on some of the most important reforms: energy, security, justice, telecommunications and education.

Eleven incoming students in the Jacobs School of Engineering and Division of Physical Sciences have been awarded fellowships as part of the new University Center for Exemplary Mentoring, launched by UC San Diego with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Each student will receive $40,000 over four years and participate in professional development activities designed to prepare students for a career in academia.
