January 23, 2015 — Andrew Alm Benson, a distinguished emeritus professor of biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, and renowned as one of the world’s leading plant scientists of the twentieth century, died peacefully from natural causes on Jan. 16, 2015, at UC San Diego’s Thornton Hospital. He was 97.

January 22, 2015 — On Jan. 23-25, more than 15 stroke survivors and their caregivers will go on a mini-vacation in La Jolla, CA, as part of a therapeutic retreat for those whose lives have been affected – sometimes turned upside down – by stroke. The 50s-themed stroke camp is being co-hosted by UC San Diego Health System, which has one of the nation’s first certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers.

January 22, 2015 — Researchers at University of California, San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Bridge Institute at the University of Southern California report the first crystal structure of the cellular receptor CXCR4 bound to an immune signaling protein called a chemokine. The structure answers longstanding questions about a molecular interaction that plays an important role in human development, immune responses, cancer metastasis and HIV infections.

January 22, 2015 — Upending decades-old dogma, a team of scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say enzymes long categorized as promoting cancer are, in fact, tumor suppressors and that current clinical efforts to develop inhibitor-based drugs should instead focus on restoring the enzymes’ activities.

January 22, 2015 — Nearly 200 UC San Diego volunteers gathered at Howard Pence Elementary School on Sunday to revitalize the school’s garden, paint murals on the playground and much more. The service project, held as part of the campus’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, was organized by Volunteer50 and the Center for Student Involvement to educate students about the impact they can make in the local community. Following the Day of Service, about 500 campus members represented UC San Diego in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, celebrating “Freedom Through Education.”

January 21, 2015 — After 25 years of successfully helping students, the University of California, San Diego’s Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention Resource Center (SARC) is expanding its services to provide crisis intervention and advocacy to faculty and staff, in addition to students. Due to the expansion of services, as well as a recent call to action by University of California President Janet Napolitano to have a system-wide consistent model for the prevention and response to sexual assault and violence, SARC has changed its name to CARE: Advocacy Office for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Misconduct.
