Nearly a thousand graduating seniors from all six colleges gathered on RIMAC Field Friday night for the 7th Annual All Campus Graduation Celebration. The event offered students a time to relax, reunite and reminisce with friends and family while being treated to appetizers from local food vendors and a concert by San Diego rock band Pinback.

Leadership, faculty and staff at the University of California, San Diego are mourning the recent loss of two generous friends to the campus: philanthropists Miriam and Jerome Katzin. Married for more than 75 years, Miriam died on June 2; Jerome’s death followed less than two weeks later on June 14.

Carol Padden, an award-winning scholar of sign languages and a longtime member of the University of California, San Diego community, has been appointed dean of the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego, effective Oct. 1, 2014. The appointment follows an extensive national search.

In a further test of a novel theory that suggests autism is the consequence of abnormal cell communication, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that an almost century-old drug approved for treating sleeping sickness also restores normal cellular signaling in a mouse model of autism, reversing symptoms of the neurological disorder in animals that were the human biological age equivalent of 30 years old.

It’s broadly assumed that cells degrade and recycle their own old or damaged organelles, but researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Kennedy Krieger Institute have discovered that some neurons transfer unwanted mitochondria – the tiny power plants inside cells – to supporting glial cells called astrocytes for disposal.

The 4K video format for digital cinema is now making its way into videogames and other digital media as consumers chase after as many pixels in their homes as possible. But 4K is a new-enough format that, when a maker of game consoles wanted to test its first device to handle 4K content, the company enlisted the help of Qualcomm Institute project scientist Todd Margolis at the University of California, San Diego.
