January 14, 2015 — At first glance, the title of the Winter 2015 exhibition in the gallery@calit2, LOUD silence, appears to be a contradiction in terms. But for the curator and four artists represented in the exhibition, who are each at a different point on the hearing spectrum, it’s clear that the Deaf have a strong understanding and connection to sound and voice, and that those who have full hearing can appreciate the value and meaning of silence versus the absence of sound.

November 5, 2014 — The Qualcomm Institute is inviting University of California, San Diego-affiliated musicians, video artists, composers, engineers, and scientists to submit interdisciplinary event proposals to develop and/or stage their works and research in the institute’s high-tech venues.

October 6, 2014 — “World War I and the Birth of the Modern World,” a free public lecture series featuring UC San Diego faculty, launches on Oct. 14 and continues through Dec. 2.

September 16, 2014 — Archaeologists led by University of California, San Diego Anthropology Professor Thomas E. Levy have discovered a small Egyptian scarab bearing the name of Sheshonq I – the only historical figure mentioned in both the Hebrew Bible (as Shishak) and Egyptian monuments indirectly related to the Biblical King Solomon.

September 16, 2014 — A trip to the Guatemalan jungle usually nets a few souvenirs: Photographs of Maya ruins, bragging rights about encounters with venomous snakes, perhaps a bug bite or two.

September 3, 2014 — The University of California, San Diego has selected Jordan Peimer to serve as executive director of ArtPower! effective Oct. 6, 2014, following a nationwide executive search. Focused on student engagement with the arts, ArtPower! has established a reputation over the last 10 years as a vibrant and innovative presenting arts organization that provides opportunities for students to connect with emerging and international performing artists. Peimer will lead the organization in building upon its music, dance and film series as well as developing new interactive programs for the campus and local community.

August 20, 2014 — An ancient text considered to be the first great work of literature will get a modern treatment Thursday evening at the sixth performance in the Qualcomm Institute’s Initiative for Digital Exploration of Arts and Sciences (IDEAS) series.

June 20, 2014 — Cristina Della Coletta, a professor of Italian and an associate dean at the University of Virginia, has been appointed dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego. Effective Aug. 15, 2014, the appointment follows an extensive national search.

June 18, 2014 — When exploratory divers discovered the underwater Mexican cave site known as Hoyo Negro, the conditions of the cave were so pristine and stable, says archaeologist Dominique Rissolo, “it looked like no one had ever exhaled a breath there.”

May 2, 2014 — A team of archaeologists and engineers from the University of California, San Diego have returned from a field expedition to Quintana Roo, Mexico, where they digitally documented two at-risk archaeological sites – a 16th century church and an ancient Maya cave shrine -- using a high-tech laser scanner.
