In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has gone up more than fourfold. In coastal water bodies, including estuaries and seas, low-oxygen sites have increased more than 10-fold since 1950. Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as Earth warms.

Historical cliff erosion rates may have little power to predict future risk, according to a recent study from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego that used laser data to create 3D maps. The new research provides accurate erosion rates for 680 miles of the California coast, from the US-Mexico border to Bodega Head in Sonoma County. It identifies areas that have eroded faster than others, and introduces a new experimental hazard scale to identify areas that may be at greater risk of impending collapse.

The combined effects of pesticides and a lack of nutrition form a deadly one-two punch for animals, new research shows for the first time. Researchers studied how honey bees fared with exposure to pesticides and limited nutrient sources, scenarios found in agricultural areas. They were surprised to find that bee deaths increased by up to 50 percent more than they expected.

Using X-ray beams and lasers, a team of researchers led by the University of California San Diego discovered how the movement of ions in hybrid perovskites causes certain regions within the material to become better solar cells than other parts.

Scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego developed new technology to study coral reefs, by creating detailed 3D photomosaics and software that allows researchers to digitally classify corals. A new study in Coral Reefs used this technology to analyze the reef at Palmyra Atoll, where researchers made discoveries around coral spatial ecology.

The National Science Foundation has awarded $2.8 million to the University of California San Diego to construct a replica ocean-atmosphere system on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. The new Scripps Ocean Atmosphere Research Simulator will mimic the ocean with unprecedented accuracy, capturing the interactions of wind, waves, microbial marine life, and chemistry at the sea surface in a laboratory setting.
