October 17, 2017 — A noted scholar and a world-leader in microbiome research, Rob Knight, Ph.D. will take guests inside the human body and share the dirt on the microbiome, the focus of his new book, published in June 2017. On Tuesday, October 24, Knight will discuss Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in Geisel Library’s Seuss Room. The UC San Diego Library talk is free to attend and open to the public. A reception and a book signing with Dr. Knight will follow. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event from the UC San Diego Bookstore.

October 5, 2017 — The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego once again launches a year-long series of educational events that will focus on the theme, The Possibility of Renewal: The Shoah Between Past, Present, and Future. This year’s programming, presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program, will unearth how renewal is possible in the wake of genocide, shed light on what it means for a defeated people to resurrect its past, and explore the roles of memory and justice in the process of renewal.

September 19, 2017 — The UC San Diego Library and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla are teaming up to celebrate the work of internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Joyce Cutler-Shaw. The joint exhibition, “Library Duet,” highlights the many stages of a distinguished and prolific artist’s career. The Athenaeum exhibit, opening September 23, will display a retrospective of Cutler-Shaw’s artist’s books from its permanent collection, while the UC San Diego Library will exhibit Cutler-Shaw’s archival materials, including its permanent display—Alphabet of Bones—and Cutler-Shaw’s current work, Brain Project. An opening reception will be held in Geisel Library on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 5 – 7 pm in the Seuss Room.

August 15, 2017 — The University of California San Diego has been ranked the 15th best university in the world by the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UC San Diego was also named the world’s third best public college. The campus was named the world’s fourth best public college and nationally, UC San Diego was recognized as the country’s 13th best university.

June 15, 2017 — The West Antarctic Ice Sheet, a landbound mass of ice larger than Mexico, experienced substantial surface melt through the austral summer of 2015-2016 during one of the largest El Niño events of the past 50 years. The finding is of interest, because El Niño events are expected to become more common if planetary warming trends continue.

May 22, 2017 — When World War II came to a close in 1945, the U.S. Government recruited a few leading German scientists, who it judged could contribute to America’s space and military programs. In addition, the rationale was that if the government hadn't done this, these top scientists, along with their scientific knowledge and military secrets, would have been swept up by the Soviet Union. Journalist Eric Lichtblau, uncovers a series of much more disconcerting findings in his 2014 book, The Nazis Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler’s Men, which reveals that the U.S. allowed approximately 10,000 Nazis—some of whom were directly involved in heinous and genocidal acts—to immigrate and take up residence in the U.S.

May 11, 2017 — On April 19, one department and 11 members of the UC San Diego community were recognized at the 7th Annual Integrity Awards Ceremony for their contributions to academic, research and professional integrity on campus. The awards were hosted by the Academic Integrity Office and Research Ethics Program to honor our university’s commitment to uphold the six pillars of integrity—responsibility, honesty, fairness, respect, trustworthiness and courage.

May 11, 2017 — A sampling of the works from artist Ted Meyer’s intriguing Scarred for Life series will be on display, beginning May 15 through September 1, 2017, in the Biomedical Library Building breezeway. The exhibit and an opening reception on May 15 are a collaboration between the UC San Diego Library and Oceanside Museum of Art, which is holding a major exhibition of the artist’s work—Ted Meyer: Scarred for Life— from May 27 through September 17, 2017.

April 11, 2017 — With his retirement on the horizon, University Librarian Brian Schottlaender has pledged two generous gifts to the UC San Diego Library, one to advance the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative (GLRI) and another to support the Archive for New Poetry in the Library's Special Collections & Archives.

March 30, 2017 — Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist, Joyce Cutler-Shaw, a member of the University of California San Diego’s inaugural MFA (Master of Fine Arts) class of 1972, has received the UC San Diego Library’s Geisel Citation award for Library Philanthropy. Cutler-Shaw is the first alumna to receive the Library’s annual Geisel Citation, which is presented to active and stalwart supporters, who have made significant contributions to the growth and success of the Library.
