Scientists have successfully completed the first outdoor field trial sanctioned by the EPA for genetically engineered algae. Algae tested under real-world conditions in outdoor ponds demonstrated that genetically engineered strains can be successfully cultivated outdoors without adversely impacting native algae populations.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego has been granted a supplemental award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to double the number of graphic processing units, or GPUs, on its petascale-level Comet supercomputer in direct response to growing demand for GPU computing across a wide range of research domains.

A team of scientists from UC San Diego and two other universities has received a five year, $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to unravel the fundamental properties of melanins, a family of natural pigments found in skin, hair, eyes and even the plumage of brightly colored birds.

By applying a novel computer algorithm to closely mimic how the brain learns, a team of researchers – with the aid of the Comet supercomputer based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego – has identified and replicated neural circuitry that resembles the way an unimpaired brain controls limb movement.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to augment its campus computing cluster with new capabilities for bioinformatics analyses to support researchers across campus – including the ability to conduct de-multiplexing, mapping, and variant calling of a single human genome in less than one hour.

By applying mathematical models to a large number of experiments in which bacterial growth is inhibited, a team of physicists, biologists and bioengineers from UC San Diego developed a “general growth law” that explains the relationship between the average cell size of bacteria and how fast they grow.
