To celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 21-27), UC San Diego Today is illuminating the stories of three passionate volunteers. They each embody the spirit of service, inspiring the campus community with their unwavering commitment to making a difference on local, regional and global scales.
Although about 20% of the United States population live in rural areas, only 11% of physicians practice in these locations. New research from the University of California San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy shows that relaxed visa requirements enable more foreign-trained doctors to practice in remote and low-income areas, without reducing employment of U.S.-trained doctors.
A thin film that combines an electrode grid and LEDs can both track and produce a visual representation of the brain’s activity in real-time during surgery–a huge improvement over the current state of the art. The device is designed to provide neurosurgeons visual information about a patient’s brain to monitor brain states during surgical interventions to remove brain lesions including tumors and epileptic tissue.

Niraj Dangoria has been appointed Vice Chancellor for Operations Management and Capital Programs. Dangoria will supervise a diverse portfolio of critical areas vital to the overall operations of UC San Diego including the Health System. Reporting to the Chancellor and as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, Dangoria will join UC San Diego in July 2024.
The campus and local community is invited to support the success of young scholars at The Preuss School UC San Diego, a charter middle and high school on the university campus, at the annual Preuss Promise benefit celebration on April 27 at The Preuss School.
Roger Hailstork recently rejoined UC San Diego as director of the UC San Diego Bookstore after a decade away. He is thrilled by the changes on campus—everything from new connections to the Divine Nine Plaza—and focused on making sure all students can get academic resources at an accessible price.
