Two New Provosts to Take the Helm at Thurgood Marshall and Earl Warren Colleges

Leslie Carver, professor of psychology, will be Thurgood Marshall College's next provost and Emily Roxworthy, professor of theatre, will serve as the new provost of Earl Warren College. Both appointments are effective July 1.

“We are pleased to have both professors join the team of provosts in support of our unique college system,” said Barbara Sawrey, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and dean of Undergraduate Education at UC San Diego. “The colleges allow our students to receive individualized advising and support services, and it gives them the opportunity to enjoy the close-knit community of a small liberal arts college within a large research university.”

Carver, a scholar and educator, has a strong record of service and commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, equity and diversity. She joined UC San Diego’s faculty in 2001, working in the area of infant memory, social referencing, and face processing and social development in children with autism. As director of the Developmental Cognitive and Social Neuroscience Lab for 14 years, she has mentored and managed numerous graduate students and lab managers, and more than 200 undergraduate research assistants. Carver also chairs the Baby Sibs Research Consortium (BSRC), which is charged with researching predictors of outcomes in children who are at risk for developing an autism spectrum disorder.

Carver has been actively engaged in service on several campus and system-wide committees focused on improving the educational experience for students and enhancing campus climate and diversity. As a member, vice chair, then chair of the Faculty Senate's Undergraduate Council between 2011 and 2015, she shepherded multiple educational policy changes designed to improve student retention and success, including efforts to facilitate transfer students’ transition to the university, review and modification of the undergraduate writing programs, and steps to increase diversity efforts across the campus.

“Professor Carver’s administrative and academic accomplishments, extraordinary level of student engagement, and vision for the future of Marshall College make her exceptionally well qualified to provide leadership as provost,” said Suresh Subramani, executive vice chancellor of Academic Affairs. “I am delighted that she will be in this important and challenging leadership position.”

Carver added, “It is an honor to serve as provost at such a rich and dynamic college. I look forward to working with the Thurgood Marshall College students, staff and faculty.”

Carver’s experience also includes serving on the UC Committee on Educational Policy and on the campus’s Academic Senate Committee on Diversity and Equity, as well as the Academic Integrity Review Board, and the dean of Social Sciences’ Diversity Council. She initiated and has chaired the Psychology Department Diversity Committee since its formation in 2010. Carver was awarded the Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching in 2014.

Emily Roxworthy, Earl Warren College’s New Provost

Roxworthy, in many ways, has demonstrated a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, equity and diversity. She also served on various departmental, college, campus-wide, and system-wide committees.

“Professor Roxworthy is an active and accomplished scholar and teacher with a demonstrated record of commitment to undergraduate education,” Subramani said. “Her experience and broad service contributions across UC San Diego make her the ideal leader for this position.”

Roxworthy’s scholarly work focuses on the intersection of theatre history and performance studies. Her particular interests are in interculturalism, Asian/Asian American theatre, digital media and role playing. She served as acting provost of Thurgood Marshall College in Fall 2015, following two years of lecturing for Marshall's “Dimensions of Culture” course. She has also taught in Sixth College’s Culture, Art and Technology (CAT) program and received a Sixth College teaching award. In addition to her appointment in the Department of Theatre and Dance, she is a faculty affiliate in the Department of Ethnic Studies and the Critical Gender Studies Program. Her college appointment is in Warren, where she has served on the College’s Writing Advisory Committee and Executive Committee of the Faculty.

“I am very excited to start working with Warren students and staff full time, and to find creative ways to connect UC San Diego faculty with our exceptional college system,” Roxworthy said.

Roxworthy is currently serving as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Diversity and Equity with broad responsibility to promote equity, excellence and diversity within faculty ranks. She will complete her service as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor on June 30 and assume the Warren College provost position the following day.

She has served as chair of the system-wide University Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity (UCAADE). Roxworthy’s interactive theatre piece, "Ready to Vote," was the centerpiece of the leadership seminar, Fostering Inclusive Excellence: Strategies and Tools for Department Chairs and Deans at all 10 UC Campuses. She was recognized for this and other contributions in support of UC San Diego’s commitment to diversity as a university-wide recipient of a 2015 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Award. Roxworthy was also recognized by the Academic Senate with a 2012 Distinguished Teaching Award.
