Audiences who attend an ArtPower! event don’t just watch a performance—they engage with the artists and get a taste of the creative process. On Sunday, April 26, philanthropists will enjoy a sampling of the organization’s unique approach at the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Co-chaired by Joan Jordan Bernstein and Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive lunch, a live master class with a UC San Diego student string quartet and a special performance by members of the acclaimed Amphion String Quartet. The event is open to the public and all proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund.

Physics majors at the University of California, San Diego will have the opportunity to gain experience and training on the same high-tech tools that industry researchers use, thanks to contributions from Quantum Design. The San Diego-based technology company—which has strong alumni ties to the campus—is providing in-kind and cash gifts totaling $279,000 to update and modernize lab courses and instructional materials in the department of physics.

Surf legends from around the world will join local scientists, businesses and community members in the fight against cancer at the 21st annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational on Sunday, Aug. 17. The beachside fundraiser includes a surfing competition, traditional Polynesian dancing, music, auctions and a tropical buffet. All proceeds will support research and patient care at the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Fifteen faculty members at the University of California, San Diego have been selected for the Hellman Fellowship Program for 2014-2015. The program provides financial awards to junior faculty members to support their research and scholarly work as they advance toward tenure. A total of $487,500 was awarded to the 2014-2015 class of fellows.

Glaucoma specialist Felipe Medeiros, MD, PhD, professor of clinical ophthalmology and medical director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center at the University of California, San Diego Shiley Eye Center, has been named the inaugural holder of the Ben and Wanda Hildyard Chair for Diseases of the Eye. The chair is one of three established by a bequest from Ben and Wanda Hildyard to help UC San Diego School of Medicine recruit and retain top faculty members. The bequest provided endowment funds of more than $6 million to establish the three chairs.

MJ Harbert, MD, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has been named a recipient of an Individual Biomedical Research Award by The Hartwell Foundation for her project “Brain Activity During Birth for Prediction of Newborns at Risk for Brain Injury.”

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine will establish a new endowed chair thanks to a legacy gift from Trude Kahn Hollander, M.D. A longtime friend of the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center, which houses the department, Hollander has made arrangements in her estate plan to fund the Dr. Trude K. Hollander Endowed Chair. The endowment will support a faculty member in the Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
