UC San Diego Researchers Collaborate to Fool the Eye and the Mind through Touch

UC San Diego researchers are using a Chancellor’s Interdisciplinary Collaboratories Fellowship to explore Augmented Reality. Department of Visual Arts Professor Sheldon Brown and M.F.A. candidate Jon Paden are partnering with scholars in the departments of Neuroscience, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and NanoEngineering on a project entitled, “Tromper soi-même: Fooling the senses with new techniques of combined visual and afferent Augmented Reality rendering of sight and touch.”

Visual Arts Exhibitions Emphasize Building Community at UC San Diego and Beyond

Hundreds of visitors recently helped usher in “Making Communities: Art and the Border,” an exhibition that shines a light on immigrant communities as a source of creativity. During its opening, several UC San Diego artists participated in a speaking program addressing the recent rhetoric citing Mexico as a source of crime and economic decline. Curated by Ph.D. alumna Tatiana Sizonenko (’13), this third major exhibition in a series of programs celebrating the Department of Visual Arts’ 50th anniversary—“VISUAL ARTS @ 50: ART INTO LIFE—is on view now through April 13 at three distinct campus locations: the University Art Gallery (UAG), the SME Visual Arts Gallery (SME) and the Cross Cultural Center galleries.

UC San Diego Visual Arts Graduate Students Showcase their Talents

In the largest display of scholarship and creativity in visual arts at the university, UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts graduate students have organized two full days of programs designed to welcome the campus and community. The annual events known as the “Ph.D. Symposium” and the “Open Studios” highlight graduate student achievements. The programs take place Friday, March 3, 3:30 – 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 4, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. in three campus locations: the University Art Gallery, the Structural and Materials Engineering Building and the Visual Arts Facility.

UC San Diego Visual Arts Exhibition Honors Art and Computing Pioneer Harold Cohen

At recent celebratory receptions, more than 200 campus and community members paid tribute to the legacy of the late Harold Cohen, University of California San Diego Department of Visual Arts professor emeritus who passed away last year. Renowned for creating AARON, an artificial intelligence art-making machine, Cohen and his affiliated works are featured in an honorary exhibition entitled “Harold Cohen, Creating Computational Creativity.” It surveys 40 years of the vibrant and large-scale prints that demonstrate Cohen’s innovative process and invites dialogue about the role of the artist and art. The show runs at the University Art Gallery and in the Visual Arts Gallery in the Structural and Materials Engineering (SME) Building through Feb. 17, when it will conclude with a closing symposium, "Art and Artificial Intelligence (AI), After AARON." The symposium will feature leaders in contemporary art and AI from Google, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and the Salk Institute.

UC San Diego Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Visual Arts Department

The UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts kicks off a two-year program in the University Art Gallery (UAG) to celebrate its 50th anniversary with “Extensions of Photography: A Visual Arts Faculty, Emeritus Faculty and Alumni Exhibition,” running through Dec. 9. Two related events will be held to inaugurate the celebration, including a panel discussion from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the University Art Gallery and the “Artists & Language” reception from 3-5 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the Seuss Room at the Geisel Library.

UC San Diego First Art Practice Ph.D. Candidate to Graduate in June

Seven years ago Katrin Pesch embarked on an academic journey in artistic research and production at the University of California San Diego. An inaugural member of the Ph.D. Art Practice concentration within the Art History, Theory and Criticism doctoral program in the Department of Visual Arts, Pesch will be the first graduate of the program this spring. She will screen her thesis film, “Finding Things I Don’t Want To Find?,” Tuesday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Visual Arts Presentation Lab, SME 149. A reading from the written component of her dissertation entitled, “(Im)material Encounters: Ghosts and Objects at the Bancroft Ranch House Museum,” will accompany the screening.

Mingling the past with the present, the University of California San Diego’s Department of Visual Arts is embarking on a series of programs to celebrate its upcoming 50th anniversary entitled, “VISUAL ARTS@50: ART INTO LIFE.” Kicking off the celebration is “Object Type,” an exhibition that runs May 3 – 13 in the Visual Arts Gallery, at the SME Building on campus.

University of California, San Diego Department of Visual Arts Ph.D. candidate Stephanie Sherman was recently recognized for her achievements in art and activism by the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), which honored her with the President’s Award for Art & Activism at the 2016 College Art Association conference in Washington D.C. The award is given to individuals who exemplify the WCA mission of creating community through art, education and social activism.
