The University of California, San Diego is celebrating the 20th annual Lytle Scholarship Concert with renowned jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and the Mambo Messengers on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m., at the Department of Music’s Conrad Prebys Concert Hall. For two decades, the annual concert has raised funds for the Lytle Scholarship Endowment, which benefits UC San Diego undergraduate students.

The University of California, San Diego alumni couple recently donated one-half million dollars to their alma mater to establish the Casey and Matthew Shen Endowment to support graduate student fellowships in the Department of Literature.

Accordingly, with an eye on the future and an emphasis on students’ marketable skills, the department offers a unique approach to design with a new undergraduate major called, “speculative design.” The first courses, already with wait-lists, are underway during Winter Quarter 2016.

The University of California, San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities is growing to better address important global issues. One of its new enterprises is the Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH), a centripetal hub established to unify several existing programs that have been operating independently within the division. With a new website and offices established on the first floor of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, students, faculty and the public with broad humanistic interest have a place at UC San Diego to turn.

University of California, San Diego professor and composer Lei Liang, together with San Diego-based Art of Élan, a group that works to expand the scope of classical music through innovative, programming in unique performance venues, received a Koussevitzky Commission Grant from the Library of Congress for a piece that Liang will write for the Formosa Quartet, a co-sponsor of the commission. The new piece will premiere March 29, 2016 in a performance at the San Diego Museum of Art.
