U.S. News and World Report has named the University of California San Diego the 15th best university in the world, up four spots compared to last year, in the third annual global rankings, released today. The campus was ranked as the 4th best public university in the U.S. on the list of the world’s top 1,000 colleges. The rankings measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.

A gift in honor of Holocaust survivor and educator Lou Dunst will establish the Lou Dunst Memorial Endowment at the UC San Diego Library. Thanks to the gift, an annual Lou Dunst Memorial Lecture will be held annual as part of UC San Diego's Holocaust Living History Workshop, which was established to preserve the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

Three University of California San Diego professors in the Division of Biological Sciences have been named Faculty Scholars by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Honorees include Professor Samara Reck-Peterson and Professor Gürol Süel as well as Associate Adjunct Professor Clodagh O'Shea.

The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego kicks off a year-long series of educational events with two compelling programs this fall, underscoring this year’s theme “Holocaust and the Burden of History.” The 2016-17 workshop events will approach the Holocaust from various angles to shed light on lesser-known aspects of the atrocities committed.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today named University of California San Diego Molecular Biology Professor Gürol Süel an HHMI-Simons Faculty Scholar. Süel will receive a total of $1.5 million over five years in support of his studies on how bacterial cells communicate with each other via electrical signals, similar to the way neurons transmit messages in the brain.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today announced the appointment of 30 private sector, nonprofit and academic leaders—including UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla—to serve on the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE). Selected from a pool of more than 200 accomplished applicants, the council members will offer recommendations for policies and programs designed to make U.S. communities, businesses, and the workforce more globally competitive.
