August 29, 2018

Over the next five years, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, will award approximately $20 million to four academic centers to launch a new national Career Development Consortium for Excellence in Glycosciences.

Marijuana Found in Breast Milk up to Six Days after Use

August 26, 2018

To better understand how much marijuana or constituent compounds actually get into breast milk and how long it remains, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine conducted a study, publishing online in Pediatrics.

Study Reveals How Enzyme Detects Ultraviolet Light Damage

August 22, 2018

In a paper published this week in the journal PNAS, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues in Spain and Finland, describe for the first time how one type of RNA polymerase gets stalled by DNA lesions caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks UC San Diego Health Nationally

August 14, 2018

UC San Diego Health and its medical and surgical specialties have again been nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 2018-19. Each year, U.S. News & World Report analyzes and reviews hospitals performance in a clinical specialties, procedures and conditions for its “Best Hospital” rankings. These rankings distinguish hospitals that provide excellent treatment for health conditions that require the most comprehensive care.

The Rising Price of Medicare Part D’s 10 Most Costly Medications

July 5, 2018

Researchers at Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of California San Diego have found that the cost for the 10 “highest spend” medications in Medicare Part D — the U.S. federal government’s primary prescription drug benefit for older citizens — rose almost one-third between 2011 and 2015, even as the number of persons using these drugs dropped by the same amount.

Turning A Phage

June 21, 2018

With microbial resistance to antibiotics growing into a major global health crisis, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, in collaboration with national research institutions and private industry, are leveraging hard-won expertise to exploit a natural viral enemy of pathogenic bacteria, creating North America’s first Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH).

UC San Diego Launches New Center for Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery and Development

June 13, 2018

Neglected tropical diseases are a group of chronic and disabling parasitic infections that primarily affect poor and underserved communities. These diseases affect more than 1 billion people globally, yet are rarely the target of new drug discovery efforts. Leveraging its strengths in molecular biology, clinical research and pharmaceutical sciences, the University of California San Diego has now launched a new Center for Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery and Development to address this unmet need in global health.

When Drugs are Wrong, Skipped or Make You Sick: The Cost of Non-optimized Medications

April 2, 2018

Rising drug prices have gotten a lot of attention lately, but the actual cost of prescription medications is more than just the bill. Researchers at Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of California San Diego estimate that illness and death resulting from non-optimized medication therapy costs $528.4 billion annually, equivalent to 16 percent of total U.S. health care expenditures in 2016. The analysis is published March 26 by Annals of Pharmacotherapy.

SDSC Simulations Reveal How a Heart Drug Molecular Switch Is Turned On and Off

March 6, 2018

The study, published in the March 5 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), describes how the supercomputing power of Gordon, Comet, and GPU clusters, all based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, were used with improved accelerated molecular dynamics (aMD) or Gaussian aMD (GaMD) to simulate the merger of a G-protein “mimetic nanobody” to a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), the largest and most diverse group of membrane receptors in animals, plants, fungi, and protozoa.
