Transportation Services Transitions – Town Hall to be held Nov. 6

Over the years, Transportation Services has played a significant role in transforming UC San Diego into an award-winning campus for sustainability. The percentage of campus commuters using alternative transportation has increased from 34 to an impressive 59 percent in just the last 10 years. As a result, Transportation Services’ costs for funding transit and shuttle programs have dramatically increased over the past several years, while incoming revenue from parking has decreased.

“Transportation Services is a completely self-supporting department, which receives no state funds or revenue from student fees,” said Robert Holden, director of Auxiliary Business Services, which oversees Transportation Services at UC San Diego. “Nearly all of our revenue comes from fees associated with parking on campus.”

While the use of alternative transportation is a positive for environmental sustainability and the campus’ effort to go green, Transportation Services is taking action to ensure that it can continue to provide essential services to the campus community and remain financially viable.

Based on feedback gathered from the campus community over the last two years through a comprehensive survey, Town Halls and ongoing conversations, Transportation Services is modifying its original proposal put forth earlier this year.

Updates are being shared via Town Halls and online at the Move UC San Diego website. Two Town Halls were held last week and a third Town Hall is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Eleanor Roosevelt College’s The Great Hall. The Town Hall will feature panelists representing Auxiliary Business Services, Transportation Services, Physical and Community Planning, Commute Solutions and undergraduate students.

All members of the campus community are invited to attend, ask questions and offer feedback. Limited reserve parking will be available for attendees on the top level of Pangea Parking Structure.
