Campus Community Encouraged to Stay in the Know with ‘On The Go’

The extension of the San Diego Trolley is one of several regional transportation projects that will transform access to campus over the next few years.

Over the next few years, a series of regional transportation projects will occur at and around the University of California, San Diego, transforming how students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors will access campus. In an effort to keep the campus community up-to-date on these projects and the related impacts, the On The Go website has been launched at onthego.ucsd.edu. The site offers important details on each transportation project and will be updated in a timely manner with helpful information and resources.

“These projects are going to change how we get to, from and around UC San Diego,” said Brian Gregory, associate vice chancellor for campus resource planning initiatives, who oversees community and physical planning at the university. “Construction will be significant in some cases and we’re making every effort to minimize the impact to our community.”

The university has been working closely with the regional partners involved in these projects, which include the San Diego Association of Governments, Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transit System and the City of San Diego. These projects have been years in the making and will benefit the campus by easing street traffic and parking demands, improving air quality and better connecting the university with the greater San Diego community.

The Gilman Transit Center is the first in this series of regional transportation projects. Construction started in mid-June and completion is expected this September. Other projects include:

• A major expansion to the Genesee Avenue Bridge and Interstate 5 interchange with enhanced bicycle features;
• A new bridge across Interstate 5 at Gilman Drive to better connect east and west campuses for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians;
• The Light Rail Transit (“Trolley”) project with two UC San Diego stations;
• And improvements to Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive to accommodate future Direct Access Ramps from Interstate 5 for high occupancy vehicles.

Construction notices will continue to be sent out for each project as well as notices regarding any temporary interruptions in utility services. All members of the campus community are encouraged to visit the On The Go website and check back for regular updates.
