Statement from UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla on the Death of Alumnus James Avery

The passing of acclaimed actor, poet and alumnus James Avery is a great loss for UC San Diego. He was a strong champion of our campus, returning often to his alma mater as a featured guest and commencement speaker. A scholarship recipient himself, James showed great generosity by establishing with his wife Barbara—also a UC San Diego graduate—the James Avery Endowed Scholarship Fund which will continue in perpetuity to provide undergraduate scholarships to African-American students majoring in the performing arts at UC San Diego.
