UC San Diego Named 14th Best University in World in Shanghai Jiao Tong University Rankings

Center for World-Class Universities praises campus for academic programs in science, mathematics, medicine, social sciences and engineering

The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 14th best university in the world for the second consecutive year, according to the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). In addition, UC San Diego’s life sciences and computer science programs are both ranked 11th in the globe. The rankings were recently released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a public research university located in Shanghai, China, renowned as one of the oldest and most prestigious and selective universities in China.

“It is an honor for UC San Diego to once again be recognized as one of the world’s premier universities,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Our extraordinary faculty, bright students and talented staff all contribute to UC San Diego’s excellence in education, research and patient care.”

The Shanghai rankings are compiled on the basis of six measures: the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of articles published in Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in the Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance.

Shanghai Jiao Tong’s Academic Ranking of World Universities list also recognizes broad subject fields in which UC San Diego’s programs excel. Life sciences is ranked 11th, engineering ranked 18th, clinical medicine and pharmacy ranked 22nd, social sciences ranked 23rd, and natural sciences and mathematics ranked 26th. Selected subject field rankings for UC San Diego include computer science (11) chemistry (18), economics (18) and mathematics (22).

Khosla added, “UC San Diego is a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university with strengths across multiple disciplines.”

UC San Diego recently earned more than $1 billion in research funding, facilitating inspirational research programs across a multitude of disciplines.

Academic Ranking of World Universities evaluated more than 1,200 universities and published the top 500 on the web.

UC San Diego was also recently ranked 20th best by the Center for the World University Rankings (CWUR).
