UC San Diego Names Juan González New Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Juan González, a collaborative leader and strong student advocate, has been appointed as vice chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of California, San Diego effective September 1, 2014.

González has served as vice president for Student Affairs at a number of prestigious universities over a 22-year period; most recently, he held the position at the University of Texas at Austin, which has a student population of more than 50,000. Prior to that, he served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Arizona State University; Georgetown University; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; and California State University, San Bernardino.

“We are pleased to welcome Juan González to the UC San Diego community,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “His qualifications are outstanding. Juan has been a champion of students, developing numerous innovative programs and initiatives throughout his career aimed at improving the student experience.”

At UT Austin, González oversaw an annual operating budget of over $100 million and the annual distribution of nearly $600 million in financial aid, in addition to a $125 million capital budget.

“As a first-generation college graduate, Juan González is committed to expanding college access, opportunity and success for students,” said Suresh Subramani, executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “These core values make Juan uniquely qualified for the position of vice chancellor for Student Affairs at UC San Diego.”

Subramani added, “Juan González has an impressive track record of successfully developing programs which have resulted in higher retention and graduation rates.”

González’s responsibilities at UC San Diego will include the development, assessment and improvement of services that meet and support the needs of students and the university’s mission.

“It is an honor to be of service to the students of UC San Diego,” said González. “Students are the foundation of all universities and I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the campus’s goal of being a student-centered university.”

He added, “I am eager to arrive and create partnerships and collaborations with many in the UC San Diego campus community.”

Over the course of González’s academic career, he has demonstrated a collaborative, team-oriented leadership in which he has formed strong partnerships with students, faculty, staff and administrators, and has worked collectively to promote student engagement and learning.

As vice chancellor for Student Affairs, González will support UC San Diego’s vision of being a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university by overseeing a wide range of student services and programs. These services encompass academic enrichment, admissions and enrollment services, athletics, international education, residential life, research opportunities and more.

In addition, his responsibilities will include creating a student experience that fosters the intellectual, social, ethical and personal development of students, preparing them to become engaged and constructive members of a diverse, dynamic and global society.

González received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his master’s degree in Bilingual-Bicultural Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio and his bachelor’s degree in Latin-American Studies from Texas Tech University.
