U.S. News and World Report Again Names UC San Diego One of Nation’s Top 10 Public Universities

The University of California, San Diego has been ranked 8th best public university and 38th best university in the nation by U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best Colleges guidebook released today. For more than a decade, the publication has listed UC San Diego among the nation’s top 10 public universities.

The U.S. News best colleges guidebook included undergraduate academic rankings for engineering in which the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering was ranked 23rd in the category for engineering schools that award doctorates. The Jacobs School also garnered a 5th place spot in the Biomedical/Biomedical Engineering category for the third consecutive year.

“It is truly an honor for UC San Diego to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s premier universities,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “This is a reflection of the quality of our academic enterprise and our diverse strengths across disciplines – from the arts and humanities to the social and physical sciences.”

In addition to academic reputation, graduation, retention rates and faculty resources, the U.S. News rankings are based on student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

UC San Diego has been ranked 8th best public university and 38th best university in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

The Best Colleges 2013 edition ranked 281 public, private and for-profit national universities. These colleges offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees and have some emphasis on research.

In Aug. 2012, UC San Diego was recognized by Washington Monthly as the nation’s #1 college for the third consecutive year based its research, social mobility and commitment to service.

In addition to UC San Diego, the list of the U.S. News’ top 20 public national universities also included five other University of California campuses: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC San Santa Barbara. For more details, go to www.usnews.com/colleges.
