Former Scripps Director and Prominent Physicist Dies

Edward A. Frieman, former director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and a prominent national advisor to the government on issues of vital importance to defense, energy, and science policy, died of a respiratory illness at UC San Diego’s Thornton Hospital in La Jolla on April 11. He was 87 years old.

Students Help Mission Bay Aquatic Center Achieve LEED Platinum Certification

Students at UC San Diego and San Diego State University collaborated to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center (MBAC), recently earning the center a platinum Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Under the supervision of Michelle Perez, head of UC San Diego’s LEED team and UC San Diego sustainability analyst, UC San Diego students worked with SDSU students to “self-certify” the aquatic center, the world’s largest instructional waterfront facility.
