U.S. News & World Report Again Ranks UC San Diego One of the Nation’s Top 10 Public Universities

The University of California, San Diego has been ranked one of the top 10 public universities in the nation today by U.S. News & World Report.  UC San Diego, the San Diego region’s only university listed in the top 10, is ranked 8th best public university and 37th best university in the nation in the publication’s 2012 Best Colleges guidebook that includes public as well as private and for-profit institutions.

The rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduate rate performance and alumni giving.

“We are proud that U.S. News & World Report has ranked UC San Diego as one of the nation’s top 10 public universities for more than a decade,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.  “It showcases our commitment to academic excellence, the quality of our stellar faculty, the strength of our research programs, and the success of our students and alumni.”

Additionally, U.S. News & World Report included two undergraduate academic rankings for engineering and business programs. The UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering’s undergraduate program was ranked 20th in the category for engineering schools that award doctorates, up two spots from last year. The Jacobs School garnered a 5th place spot in the Biomedical/Biomedical Engineering category for the second consecutive year. 

The Best Colleges 2012 edition ranked 280 national universities, up from 262 institutions last year. These universities offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees and some emphasis on research.

Recently, UC San Diego's commitment to community service was recognized by the Washington Monthly as the nation’s top college in rankings measuring “what colleges are doing for the country” for the second consecutive year.

The full list of the “Top 30 Public National Universities” was led by UC Berkeley and included five other University of California schools, including UC San Diego.  For more details go to www.usnews.com/colleges
