The past two weekends have been full of sorrow with three horrific shootings taking place in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas as well as closer to home, in Gilroy, California. We are heartbroken over these senseless shootings that have terrorized our communities and country, claimed innocent lives, left many people injured, and eroded our collective sense of peace and safety. To the families, loved ones and friends of all those affected by these terrible tragedies we extend our deepest sympathies.

While authorities continue to investigate the motives behind these acts, there is strong evidence that at least one of the mass shootings was motivated by hate. We condemn all acts of violence directed at others because of their identity, ethnicity, race, religion or beliefs. These acts should have no place in our communities or our nation. As we move forward, let us unite in acknowledgement of our shared humanity and as proactive citizens. Together, we can make our voices heard and advocate for a future where terrorism, violence and hatred are eradicated.

These events are unsettling for all, but know that the safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff is always our highest priority. UC San Diego offers many services to support you during this difficult time.
