Message from Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla

This morning, University of California President Janet Napolitano announced a Long-term Stability Plan for Tuition and Financial Aid that she will present to the Board of Regents on November 19. The plan – the first of its kind at the university – is a new five-year roadmap for low, predictable tuition that allows students and their families at all income levels, and at all levels of study, to budget for the total cost of their UC education. The Stability Plan will end the volatility in UC’s tuition-setting process.

As Chancellor of UC San Diego, I wholeheartedly support this wise course of action and have joined with my fellow UC Chancellors in a statement of support for the plan. I encourage you to review the details of the Stability Plan and the Chancellors Statement at the University of California budget website. I am confident that you’ll see the wisdom of this initiative to maintain the exceptional experience of a UC education for our students. The plan will:

  • Enable the university to enroll at least 5,000 more California students over five year
  • Ensure the continuation of the nation’s most robust financial aid program under which 55 percent of all California undergraduates have all their tuition and fees fully covered
  • Improve the student-faculty ratio
  • Provide additional course offerings
  • Increase student support services
  • Boost graduation rates and decrease time to degree

In the coming weeks, I will ask you to join in a statewide advocacy effort. While the plan addresses UC’s obligation to students and their families to provide them with the best education possible at the most affordable price, it requires that state’s partnership to succeed. We hope that UC students, families, alumni, faculty, staff and all Californians join together in urging the state to partner with us to ensure that the University of California remains affordable and accessible, while maintaining its status as the world’s greatest public university.

Thank you for your continued support of UC San Diego and the students and families in the University of California family.
