UC San Diego Among Nation’s Best Public Colleges, According to U.S. News and World Report

The University of California San Diego has been highly ranked among U.S. public colleges by U.S. News and World report. The campus is listed 12th in the publication’s Best Colleges guidebook. The publication also touted the campus’s Jacobs School of Engineering, which was named 18th among public engineering schools that offer doctorates.

The U.S. News rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduate rate performance and alumni giving.

“We are proud that we continue to gain recognition for the exceptional educational experience we offer students,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Through our teaching, research and service, our campus spurs breakthroughs that positively impact the state, nation and world.”

Just prior to the announcement of these rankings, UC San Diego netted praise and accolades from prestigious national and international organizations: Washington Monthly listed UC San Diego the No. 1 public college in the U.S.; Money magazine named the campus 2nd in the nation for providing quality education at an affordable price; and the Academic Ranking of World Universities placed the campus 15th in its list of the world’s top colleges.

Students at UC San Diego have the opportunity to learn from faculty and scholars who are at the top of their fields. In addition, the campus offers myriad undergraduate research opportunities where students get critical hands-on experience contributing to the discoveries that have defined the campus as outlier when it comes to revolutionary research.  

UC San Diego researchers recently developed a rapid, cost-effective method to create “mini” artificial human brains, or human cortical organoid, to better understand the real organ that still remains a mystery to many scientists.

In addition, researchers from the campus contributed to state-wide report that revealed that climate change could cause two-thirds of Southern California’s beaches to completely disappear by 2100 if policymakers do not act on mitigating CO2 emissions.

Other unique innovations include a recent partnership with Aira, an alumni-founded startup that leverages wearable technology, artificial intelligence and live, human agents to deliver real-time visual description to blind and low vision students, staff and faculty. The campus is the first Aira-enabled university in the U.S.— a testament to UC San Diego’s dedication to inclusivity, service and ingenuity.
