George Thornton made his first batch of beer at his sister’s apartment, using the spare bedroom to store the fermenting ale. Today, the UC San Diego alumnus is the owner of The Homebrewer in North Park, a supply store and educational resource for both beginning and advanced homebrewers. Next year, he plans to open a small production brewery and tasting room next door. Thornton is one of many UC San Diego graduates involved in the booming craft beer industry in San Diego. Student Entrepreneurs Find Success with Smart Earplugs

When Daniel Lee enrolled in Nate Delson’s Product Design and Entrepreneurship class at UC San Diego, becoming an entrepreneur wasn’t on his radar. But a little more than a year later, Lee and two other students at the Jacobs School of Engineering already have raised more than $450,000 through crowdfunding for their start-up company, Hush Technology. Their product? Smart wireless earplugs that block out external sounds but still allow users to hear their alarm clock and important messages via a smartphone app. Read More »

New Green Building Tours at UC San Diego to Blend Architecture, History and Sustainability

Blending architecture, campus history and sustainability, new Green Building Tours will be offered starting this winter. The two-hour Sunday bus tour will educate participants about how the campus’s LEED-certified buildings creatively employ sustainable design techniques and energy-efficient strategies. Four UC San Diego Students Awarded Global Food Initiative Fellowships

Four UC San Diego students have been awarded UC Global Food Initiative fellowships, funding projects that will address issues ranging from community gardens and food pantries to urban agriculture and food waste. A total of 54 University of California undergraduate and graduate students have received $2,500 each to support student-generated research, related projects or internships that focus on food issues. All 10 UC campuses plus UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are participating in the UC President’s Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program.
