A Grandfather’s Wish to Share the Sea

It was a family tradition. Every summer, Karana and Aurora Stokum would fly to San Diego to visit their grandfather, Eugene Swantz, who would treat them to an afternoon at Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Upon his passing, Swantz granted a gift to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to support K-12 outreach education at the aquarium as a way to cultivate a sense of wonder and inquiry about the sea in young people. All members of the campus community are encouraged to nominate their staff colleagues for the 32nd annual UC San Diego Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year Award Program. The program recognizes career employees in Professional and Support Staff positions who have demonstrated distinguished service and contributions to the UC San Diego and San Diego communities.
